Sonia Alins was born in Catalonia, Spain in 1974. Her early interest in drawing connected with the fascination she felt for Spanish master artists, such as Picasso or Goya, or Bosch’s surrealism. So, the human figure and the expressiveness of her characters were identity traits of Sonia’s youth artworks. In 1992, Sonia started her studies in Fine Arts in the University of Salamanca. When she obtained her degree, specialised in illustration, she started working as a freelance. Since then, Sonia has illustrated many children books, educational projects, magazines and projects for some of the most well-known companies in Spain. In 2011 Sonia Alins was awarded with the Junceda Award o the Best Illustrated Children's Album (prize granted by the Professional Association of Illustrators of Catalonia -APIC-) and, in 2013, she was awarded with the Junceda Award to the Best Educational Project. After reinforcing her background with an illustration postgraduate in Barcelona’s University, Sonia considered a new approach to her career. This moment of professional and artistic maturity came with new aesthetic referents such as Yves Klein and his deep-blue paintings, Joseph Cornell’s collages or Miquel Barcelo. So, Sonia starts a new artistic work (often three-dimensional collages) based on a poetic and surreal narrative related with her inner life, womanhood and feminism. She also explores the expressiveness of some abstract elements such as transparency and blur. Among her artworks, it is worth noting her “Dones d’aigua” (Water Women) series, with numerous international distinctions. Sonia Alins has been awarded two gold medals in Le Salon des Beaux Arts 2017 (granted by the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts in France), she has been awarded the Second Place Prize in the East West Art Award Competition 2017 (London), and one Bronze A'Design Award 2017 (Milan). Besides, Sonia Alins has been shortlisted at the World Illustration Awards 2016 and 2018 (London); she has been chosen Merit Winner in the 3x3 International Illustration Show nº 14 (New York); and she has been chosen Selected Winner in the Illustrators 60 Annual Competition (NY), in the Illustration West 56 Competition (Los Angeles) and in the 6th edition of Latin American Illustration (NY), granted by AI-AP. Sonia lives and works in Lleida, Spain.
