My playful nature is something that stretches far beyond my work (often finding its way onto my already paint-splattered clothes and odd socks) and shapes my outlook on life. This trait has helped me search for joyful imperfections while relentlessly trying to keep this adult life at arm's length. Enjoyment is a huge part of my work and I hopes the joy I feel when creating is something that will resonates with both adults and children alike. Drawing is where it all starts in my process. This helps me identify the problem and how to get the biggest impact in a picture while using minimal lines. Then from here I like to have the time to be playful. Playfulness seems to be something pushed out of us from secondary school onwards, and it’s a shame because this is where the best creativity lies. Within playfulness lies a field of, judgement free, experimentation. I often think that you can tell when someone has enjoyed making an image, you can see it throughout the whole piece of work, it looks natural and effortless. And most of all it holds a unique personal style that nobody else can ever own. So I get myself mucky with paints, collage, textures, paper and drawing. Then from there I can decide what to use and how to make the best out of what I have and what to put away for a rainy day. The everyday character is often where I find my inspiration, perhaps because I see a little bit of me in these people. Often found with a sketchbook in hand while outdoors is where I feel most alive, trying to capture peoples expressions and idiosyncrasies. I’ve always been passionate about image making and constantly walk the line of simplicity vs drama. I love to try and capture expressions through the simplest form and using composition to frame or highlight certain areas. I like my work so show some sort of energy, whether it be a slow soft energy, or a smack in the face, it needs to grab your attention and make you feel alive. Because that’s what this whole life is all about isn’t it. Feeling alive.
