Chris Leaper is an illustrator who uses traditional media- acrylic paint, pen and ink, and pencils. It all started in 1977 when, after going to see Star Wars at the cinema, Chris wanted to draw spaceships for a living. He went on to complete a degree in Product Design at the University of Huddersfield. Since then he has worked on children’s books, calendars and interior illustrations for society publications, as well as his own range of merchandise. A diverse range of influences have informed Chris’s work; childhood television programmes, movie concept design, folk legends and myths, ancient symbols and hieroglyphs, and the output of the ‘Golden Age’ illustrators- such as Rackham, Dulac, Gorey and Lotte Reiniger. Currently Chris finds himself mainly painting cats, dinosaurs and puffins. Puffins provide the opportunity to paint in bright colours and simple shapes, to play around with their appealing and instantly recognisable appearance. Chris’s studio is located within the Media Centre in Huddersfield, England and he trades as Jesmond Cat Designs. His cards and prints have sold worldwide.
