Profile

Velicia Gourdin is from Boston, MA. She attended Pratt Institute in New York and New England School of Art & Design at Suffolk University in Boston. The granddaughter of the first African American district court judge in Massachusetts (Edward O. Gourdin) and the daughter of an accomplished classical pianist and teacher (Jacqueline Gourdin) VG was encouraged to perceive her creative journey as one ultimately focused on accomplishment rather than attempting. The goal is always attainable. Self taught as a digital artist, Velicia’s work is a blend between traditional methods and the infinite flexibility of today's digital illustration tools. Influenced by Antonio Lopez, Patrick Nagel, George Stavrinos and Tony Viramontes, she seeks to share her own unique style of fashion as it stands today. Focusing on what may not be perceived as “traditional” beauty Velicia seeks to portray positive imagery of all women. Diversity is key. Each line, each application of color, each view breaks down deep rooted perceptions of beauty. Choosing a pose that exemplifies a different viewpoint is her passion. Velicia has been the subject of blog articles in Urban Bush Babes and AFROPUNK. VG counts amongst her many clients The New York Times Style magazine and has participated in exhibitions in the U.K.
