What does 2020 teach?
There are problems. But we can start the new year with the justified hope that it will be better than its predecessor. And not everyone who complains has a really heavy bag to carry.

illustration of Nearly forgotten words and their myterious provenance.
Papperlapapp, Larifari, Kladderadatsch and Brimborium – to name but a few of the charmingly old-fashioned, sometimes onomatopoetic, sometimes humorous, always memorable words. But where do they come from? For every one of them there are four seemingly scientific answers. Only one of them however is true, while the rest of them – are humbug.

Profile

Whether it’s the butterfly effect, international law or just wine and hip hop, whatever you’re interested in, I will find inspiring illustrations for you. I am an award winning illustrator and fine artist. After studying art and design at the Kunstakademie Münster, I moved to Stuttgart and completed my studies of stage and costume design at the State Academy of Fine Arts. Since 2005 I have been working for renowned publishers illustrating cover pages, fiction and non-fiction books, biographies, children’s and young adult literature as well as magazines and newspapers. My illustrations can be found on the Spiegel bestseller list and among the „Most Beautiful Books in Germany“. My illustrations have been shortlisted twice for the World Illustration Awards, in 2016 and 2020. Since 2012 I have been passing on my knowledge as a lecturer for foundations of design, magazine creation, cover pages and the composition of illustrated series. After a stop in Tokyo, Irmela now lives in Berlin with her daughter and her dog.
