illustration of Book cover illustration design for an updated edition of Idries Shah's World Tales. Originally published in 1979, the tales will be republished as a limited edition series by the Idries Shah foundation. This was a great opportunity to play around with transparent layers, creating a smokey, Arabian Nights-style effect.

illustration of I got to work on a fantastic historical romance series for Woman's Weekly magazine. The five part historical romance serial switched between modern times and the era of King Charles II, complete with beautiful dresses and roundhead soldiers.

This illustration is the final scene, featuring an intimate kiss between the leading characters in the beautifully blooming garden.
illustration of Self initiated illustration of Little Red Riding Hood in the forest, followed by the wolf.
illustration of A brand new range of silhouette stamp designs for arts and crafts company Little Claire. Also available as stickers and various other craft products.

This particular stamp features a girl reading a book in a tree.
illustration of A limited edition A2 poster commissioned as part of a collaboration between Ted Baker and The AOI. The project involved 13 illustrators depicting various Great British Pastimes, my assigned activity was fishing. This was such a fun project, only 1000 were printed and I had to sign each and every one! The posters were given away in stores worldwide after spending £150.

Laura Barrett is an illustrator from South East London, specialising in creating intricate and decorative silhouette illustrations & monochrome patterns. Since graduating from University of the Arts London in 2007 she has worked with a variety of international clients, within the fields of publishing, packaging, stationery, surface design, advertising and animation. With an emphasis on storytelling and an attention to detail, Laura's illustrations are inspired by the darker side of folk and fairy tales, as well as traditional Scherenschnitte (paper cutting). Her work explores these themes using silhouettes, created by drawing with a graphics tablet straight in to Adobe Illustrator. She loves to work in striking black and white, though is just as comfortable using colour when a project calls for it. I am represented in the USA by Mendola Art.
