illustration of For Ghostly Portraits, Balaeva set out to investigate how people interpret multiple beliefs of inhabiting spirits and guardian angels by asking them to draw their inhabiting spirit. They have a large sheet of paper to sketch their spirit in any shape and size they wish. Their portrait is then drawn on the same page from life to attempt to join the two images into a single collaborative one.

Profile

Marsha Balaeva is an illustrator and animator living in the North West. Having graduated with an MA in Illustration from University of Hertfordshire, she specialises in illustrating adult fiction using a range of techniques from fully hand-drawn to digital. In addition to illustration, Balaeva is involved in a long standing collaboration with Canadian indie bands Moonface and Frog Eyes, which involves creating animated videos using stop-motion photography, puppets, drawings and digital animation. One of these music videos titled 'Faraway Lightning" was shown at KLIK! Animation Festival in Amsterdam and was at №8 in Time Out 'The 40 best music videos of 2012'.
