I created these illustrations for an article by Ed Yong about how the pandemic made it clear that science touches everything, and everything touches science. I used tarots as a metaphor for the complexity and chaos of the pandemic issue. I preferred to let the tarots themselves speak. So, I created 12 different tarots. I used “The Pandemic” instead of the card “The fool” represented by a fool’s hat over the world to underscore how the pandemic hasn’t just been a science story.”

We love creating realistic images that can’t be created using photography, using 3D imagery to create something which doesn’t exist..but you wish it did! For the Beer Island image, we wanted to create a fantasy scene which was fun, believable and nice to look at. We thought a beer bottle shaped island would be a great image, with the Heineken label making a perfect swimming pool. All elements, including the sea, boats, palm trees and people are created using 3D and rendered realistically.
I’ve been producing record covers and t-shirt designs for Brighton rockabilly band the Long Tall Texans since the mid-1980s and they’ve always been a real joy to work on. This mini-album was their most recent release and the brief for the cover, as ever, consisted of little more than the title. The rest was left up to me. I’m pretty familiar with the group and the type of imagery appreciated by their fanbase by now but even so, that’s a very open spec compared to most illustration jobs.
