My studies for this painting came from a trip to Malaysia and Thailand, where I was captivated to see all stages of reproduction taking place simultaneously on this palm. Male (staminate) and female (pistillate) flowers grow on the same inflorescence, with the female flowers at the base of the stalks and the male extending to the tips. Ripe seeds and those of last year’s were present as well.
