Yokai: Kuzuha

illustration of Kintaro boy with superhuman strength is apparently raised by a mountain witch on a mountain on the border of Kanagawa and Shizuoka. He is supposedly based on a real person, Sakata Kintoki, who lived during the Heian period.

He was also phenomenally strong, able to smash rocks into pieces, uproot trees, and bend trunks like twigs. His animal friends served him as messengers and mounts, and some legends say that he even learned to speak their language.
Next illustration of otora-gitsune 🦊 a one-eyed, three-legged kitsune who lived in Aichi Prefecture. He is best known for kitsune tsuki—when a fox spirit possesses a human—and was particularly famous for frequently possessing the sick and infirm. He had a powerful personality, and humans possessed by this kitsune would adopt a number of his mannerisms. One would be talking endlessly about the Battle of Nagashino, traumas and adventures that they never experienced.
