illustration of The simplest pleasures are the most exquisite, like having access to an old deserted factory, to do as you please and make music or create art, with no one to bother you. Bring some spirits, kick off your shoes and if it's springtime, open a window and bring in the fresh air. WIth warm spring air coming in, the temptation to head outside might just win out. spring, factory, warehouse, wooden floor, brick wall, cement, violin, violin case, music stand, bourbon bottle, high heel shoes, factory windows
illustration of Drawn in Illustrator and rendered in Photoshop, to be used as a component in a larger illustration. All my illustrations feature carefully crafter layers so that the individual pieces can be used in different configurations, such as in an ad.

illustration of This kitchen counter illustration was created for a cookbook and features some interesting elements. The houseplant vines and ivy decoration are custom Illustrator brushes, from original vector illustration work. Watercolor brushes were used for some of the textures, but the fried chicken texture was a multi-layered illustration created in Photoshop, just for this piece. The triadic color scheme creates a cooler illustration, with a little warmth and contrast. Utensils, curtains, window, home
illustration of These five icons represent food, water, light, oxygen, and shelter. Symbolic of the things that life needs to sustain itself, these icons share a common color palette and a clean, simplified illustration style. illustration of All people on earth, all the wildlife the earth supports, all need certain things to survive. We all have a common ground. We need food, water, light to see and to grow our food, air for breathing, and abode or habitat. This whimsical symbolic representation serves to make these requirements clear. people, race, animals, tree, bark, life, environment, symbolism, semiotics
illustration of Illustration of a Honda Shadow motorcycle, drawn in Illustrator and rendered in Photoshop. Multiple photo references, at multiple angles, were used for accurate detail reference. The drawing layers and individual paths were exported and used for masks on the rendering. This motorcycle illustration was created with a transparent background so that any background can be dropped in for ultimate versatility. moto, automotive, chrome, motorbike, glass, tires, painted vehicle, spokes, headlight, turn signals
illustration of V-twin engine illustration against a rippled American flag. All vector art with the exception of the roadway photo on the air cleaner cover and primary (and very faintly on the cylinder heads). The engine is made up of gradient mesh objects in illustrator, with some gradients and blends. The flag is all adjacent gradient mesh objects, except for the wrinkle in the blue star field, which uses a gradient mesh object on top. motorcycle, chrome, fabric, flag, metal, metallic, industrial, motor, textiles
illustration of Drawing and rendering were done in Photoshop from several black and white reference photos. The reference material had many tree reflections in the hood and chrome, but this rendering was kept to just shiny chrome and paint reflections so that the car could be shown anywhere. Other backgrounds have been used; latest background is a recent photo collage, utilizing three photos. fifties,Belair,Chevrolet, tires, chrome, auto paint,57 chevy, nostalgia, retro, car, automobile
illustration of These vessels are representative of glass pieces illustrated for a product catalog and corresponding web site. Illustrated separately, which accounts for the differences in perspective, the transparency of these items allowed for versatility in creating ads and product sheets, as well as placing them against numerous dark backgrounds in many different groupings. These “reverse” illustrations require a medium to dark background. fused quartz, labware, blown glass, industry, scientific
illustration of Two daffodils, drawn in Illustrator and rendered in Photoshop, against a red-violet background. Objects such as these are often rendered independently of a background so that multiple configurations and any background can be used, creating a modular, and very versatile, illustration. flowers, nature, jonquils, narcissus, floral
illustration of The airbrush was drawn conventionally and rendered in Photoshop. The paint splashing out of that type of airbrush cup is a bit of a stretch, as it would not look exactly like that. However, the visual suggestion here is kind of wild and free and tells us that anything is possible. Originally created as a self-promotion piece, it is an old favorite, and it is still hauled on occasion: the illustration, not so much the actual airbrush itself. splash, wet, liquid, drops, chrome, silver, metallic, shiny
illustration of These “reverse” illustrations were created with white on dark backgrounds for a print catalog and corresponding website. Each object was started as a basic mechanical drawing, before creating white outline drawings in Illustrator. The shapes and reflections were rendered in Photoshop. Like glass, each illustration was transparent to some extent, which allowed for versatility in creating ads and product sheets, using many different groupings. fused quartz, labware, blown glass, industry, scientific
illustration of This daffodil drawing is the same as the one rendered in Photoshop, but this rendering is vector-based gradient mesh objects. This one is not meant to be as lifelike; this bloom is a bit more stylized. Shading with gradient mesh can produce a depth that rivals that of masking and rendering in Photoshop, but texture is needed to complete the effect in some cases. Which rendering methods are used ultimately depends on the desired look. flower, yellow, nature, jonquil, narcissus, floral, vector

illustration of Moto Dash is an all-vector illustration is made up of mainly gradient mesh objects in Illustrator, although some basic vector shapes are used. The handlebar was illustrated in a cropped fashion, as this “dash” illustration was intended for different views. Using the triple tree as a base helped add some real estate for different crops. illustration of This roller coaster illustration was created as t-shirt and merchandise art for a coaster enthusiast website. The artwork was required to look like a sketchy cartoon with soft color added. The drawing was created conventionally, scanned, and then the rendering was completed in Photoshop. wooden coaster, amusement park, thrills, perspective, signage
illustration of The type was created and mechanically beveled in Illustrator, and then rendered in Photoshop. The Illustrator paths were used for the masking in the Photoshop rendering. illustration of Mini rose vector illustration, drawn and rendered in Illustrator using gradient mesh objects. Individual meshes are used to build the structure of the shading. Shading with gradient mesh objects can produce a depth that rivals that of masking and rendering in Photoshop. Without texture, the effect is often so smooth as to be more of a stylized feel. The benefit of vector is that the rendered illustration can be scaled up or down with no loss of quality. red, rose, velvety, flower, floral, leaves

illustration of Three detailed spot illustrations for the Cleveland Innerbelt Study. The illustration work you see here was guided by three supplied sketches. Any combination of elements may be simplified or altered and used for their logo. The three were Innerbelt Bridge, Innerbelt Road, and Innerbelt Globe. illustration of Ravaged heart was created for an audio CD cover. Three hearts, one inside the other. Outermost has exploded hole in the center. Second heart visible inside, but scratched open. The scratched opening reveals a third heart, shattered. At the center, light radiates from a blue pearl. Where all the damage of the hearts symbolizes emotional distress, the blue pearl represents the blue pearl of a Kundalini Awakening. light rays, scratches, broken, reborn, explosion
illustration of This Japanese orchid bloom is authentic, but truthfully, the foliage should be more like that of jonquils. Needed a vine for a trellis, so artistic license was invoked to combine the bloom of the Japanese orchid with the foliage and vine of a philodendron. Illustration is an enlargement of an airbrush illustration; details completed with brush and ruler. Illustration was scanned into Photoshop; soft shadow and multi-color background were added later. flower, orchid, leaves, water drops, droplets

illustration of Finished illustration created as the last of nine frames for a web animation depicting creation of blister packaging. The actual pens, in a blister pack, were used for reference. To show the steps involved, nine illustrations, as frames, were needed The blister was visually complicated, so its presence alone did not complete the effect. A balance of white and transparency was needed to show the molded shape over the pens. package, animation frames, transparent, plastic, pens, blister pack, explainer
illustration of Vector railcar, built from the wheelbase up, in 2-point perspective, from my sketch. Call-outs were added later, as this artwork was used in a product brochure. Everything here is self-explanatory except for the material that looks like steps going nowhere, which was required to be present in the illustration.railroad car, vector gradient, wheels, boxcar, perspective
illustration of Airbrush; watercolor on Strathmore, detailed with handbrush and ruler. This artwork was created for a children’s card game. Few airbrush samples appear in my portfolio, for obvious reasons, but it is important to understand that the techniques used in conventional airbrush illustration are techniques that can be utilized digitally as well when carried out by an experienced illustrator. watermelon, fruit, food, slice, rind
illustration of A vector door and frame created in Illustrator, some neon type created in Photoshop, and some manually warped type with mapped images. This piece was done as a splash screen for an early portfolio-type website. These effects were done before Layer Styles, before Warps, before any kind of envelopes. illustration of Illustration created for an industrial ad for semiconductor products. Light pipes have many uses in industry, but generally, light pipes are used to transport light from one area to another. The reference material for this illustration was a group of photographs from the manufacturer that we had permission to use, but the photos were aesthetically unappealing and unclear, hence the need for an illustration. glass, prism, digital illustration, solid, scientific
illustration of Wings on the Marsh is a hand-drawn vector set, meant to be used, with some mix-and-match, in a variety of pieces that use a common color palette. Often, a natural color set is offered, too. illustration of Stylized vector “you are here” map printed as enamel on copper for outdoor signage on Ohio University campus. The goal was to create a vector map that could be updated in Illustrator, by the college. Color separations had to be set up for the enameling process. A light green went down first, then all of the rest of the colors, including white. (Anything white usually knocks out to the substrate.) Pantone enamels were used on the signs. college campus, aerial, reverse perspective, color coded
illustration of This plastic water bottle illustration was one of two bottle illustrations created for packaging of a new drink mix. The style shown here was the original style chosen for the illustration, which was based on the clear laboratory glass illustrations, but plastic has a different visual feel than glass. This type of illustration works best on a dark background. plastic, transparent, water, liquid, plastic cap, plastic bottle, water bottle
illustration of Complex building illustration, rendered in 2-point perspective in Illustrator. Required elements included a brick building with a stucco wall and concrete parapet, a glass building, an atrium, a concrete parking garage, a seam in the roof of the parking garage, windows, balconies, a cut-away with bathroom fixtures, excavation in front of both concrete and brick, steps with railings, a walkway to the garage, and landscaping. Call-outs indicate where sealants and restorative products are used.
illustration of Airbrush; watercolor on Strathmore. Lettering was done with brush and ruler, as was all the detailing. Illustration created to show various materials and surfaces: transparent glass and liquid, water droplets, paper, botanicals, etc. Illustration later digitized, that is, scanned in four sections and knitted together in Photoshop. Today, any conventional illustration techniques can be produced digitally with the proper art skills. glass bottle, liquor, rum, flower, vine, leaves, palm fronds
illustration of The Statue of Liberty drawing was the first stage of a larger project. The end product was an embossed print of Lady Liberty, suitable for framing. A sculpted die was needed for the process, but before one could be made, an accurate, highly detailed line drawing was needed. Tedious research was conducted to make the drawing as detailed and accurate as humanly possible. The final drawing was done in Illustrator.
illustration of After sketching, the final vector art was created in Illustrator. Ultimately, the drawing was etched onto a crystal tray as part of a sales award. Because this was an illustration for an engraver, the details had to be simple, but perfectly mechanical, which explains why some of the details were simple shapes. It is simplistic in the illustration, but precisely intricate in the engraving.
illustration of This console exploded view drawing was drawn conventionally (on the table) from a prototype of a child’s formula racing car. Extensive drawings were created for owner and service manuals, including body details, battery connections, steering linkage, console (shown here) and wheel assemblies, wiring harnesses, etc. All drawings for this project were created from the actual car, along with some engineering drawings.
illustration of This vector drawing was created from a very light photograph with faded details. The brocade on the mattress is a matrix of 40% black lines cut to the pattern. The bed structure itself is all vector art, built from the bottom up; wheelbase to remote control.
illustration of Collage in Photoshop. The water drop and its shadow were airbrushed in Photoshop. All in a tropical setting, this design features creatures of the wild, peacefully co-habitating inside of a single drop of water. Along with the wild animals in this piece, also featured are butterflies and some exotic vegetation, like the Bird of Paradise flower in the lower left corner. Jungle themes and a tear drop, with a surreal backdrop. This piece has won several awards.

Profile

Illustration brings life to a subject like no photograph can. Concept and mood become malleable through color and style, while capturing a realism undeterred by surroundings. Surroundings, reflections, and shadows can be created to enhance the subject, creating a space uniquely its own. Photo-realistic illustration portrays the subject in a lifelike style that is removed from ambient distractions and camera distortion. Stylized illustration adds a mood, an attitude, while sporting a clean, simplified look. Linda Carruth has been illustrating detailed shiny objects for over 30 years. She uses mechanical drawing methods and traditional rendering techniques, utilizing today's digital tools. Linda also specializes in photo-illustration, using photographic pieces and bits of ephemera, blending them to bring concepts to life.
